Tractor-Trailer Driver Loses Control and is Injured

On Wednesday, September 14, a tractor-trailer driver lost control of his rig and crashed on Interstate 70.

According to Maryland State Police, the accident happened on westbound Interstate 70 just east of Big Pool near the 13 mile marker, at around 9.00 a.m. When police arrived the truck was on its side and they freed the driver, Jason Gillard from Texas, and he was taken by ambulance and then helicopter to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

At this time, investigators do not know what caused the driver to lose control of the rig which belonged to Wayne W. Sell Trucking Corp. of Sarver, Pennsylvania and hauling a large, unidentifiable metal object on the trailer. The truck ended up in a wooded area off the right side of the highway and traffic was reduced to a single lane while rescue crews working to remove the vehicle. By the end of the afternoon, all lanes were reopened.

Hagerstown Trucker Gives Safety Advice

A Hagerstown trucker has driven 4 million miles without an accident.

Chester Masser Jr. owns TOTGAS Trucking Inc in Hagerstown and drives for FedEx Ground’s terminal off Halfway Boulevard. Masser, who is 61 will be taking part at the National Truck Driving Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. having earned his place by winning the Maryland truck driving championships earlier this year.

Masser has advice for other truck drivers saying that too many people are in a rush and it is better to be a little late rather than never arrive. He warns to always look out for other road users and expect them to make mistakes.

In his typical run, Masser hauls FedEx freight to Avon Lake, Ohio. Once there, he meets another trucker who started on the south side of Chicago so that freight which leaves Hagerstown in the morning is in Chicago in the evening. He says that it take him around 10 ½ hours to drive the 638 mile road trip with speeding being the biggest safety threat plus the electronic toys people have which are distracting.
