Hagerstown to Add Cameras At Busy Intersections

Hagerstown Police and the city have announced that they are finalizing plans to add cameras at busy intersections around town to prevent drivers from running red lights.

At present, there are no intersections in Hagerstown with red light cameras, but by June 2017 there will be four cross roads which will have cameras to issue citations. In fact three of the intersections have already been chosen: Dual Highway and Edgewood; Mulberry and Franklin; and Washington and Locust.

According to Hagerstown police, the intersections were chosen based on accident reports and once installed the cameras will record live video which will be watched by a full time officer who will review each violation before a citation is issued.

The police say that the cameras are not being installed to make money but to change the behavior of drivers who run red lights, to reduce accidents and cut back on the number of pedestrians who are being hit by vehicles in these intersections. Those who run red lights will be fined $75 and, if successful in reducing the number of accidents then more camera will be added in the future.
