Fatal Accident on the Interstate

On Wednesday, July 20 there was a fatal accident involving a semi tractor trailer and four vehicles on the Interstate 81 at Route 40 in Hagerstown.

According to Maryland State Police the accident happened shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday in the northbound lanes of I 81 near the interchange with U.S. 40. A Mazda 6 was struck by a tractor-trailer that was being driven by John Royce Richards aged 69, of Great Cacapon, W.Va. it appears that Richards failed to control the speed of the tractor-trailer when traffic slowed and the rig hit the Mazda, then struck several other vehicles before coming to a stop, with in total seven vehicles being involved.

The front seat passenger in the Mazda, 21 year old Jasmine R. Rafter of Fairplay was killed in the crash.

Nicholas Colvin, aged 22, and Gary Martin, aged 53, both of Hagerstown, were taken to Meritus Medical Center to be treated for injuries along with Talal Ahmed Alramadhan, 33, of Shippensburg, Pa., and Erwin Huszar, 67, and Marie Huszar, 52, both of Effort, Pa.

Arcie Harvey, aged 50, of Hancock was flown to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

All of those taken to hospital have now been discharged.

Two other people who were involved in the crash, Kristie Lawson, 44, of Hagerstown, and Richards, the driver of the rig, were not injured.
